Thermocouples
A thermocouple is a temperature sensor. In its most common form it consists of two wires of different composition. A Thermocouple must be located properly with respect to a work load and energy source being controlled whenever the thermocouple is used with controlling instrumentation. Considerations to keep in mind are the minimization of flow disruption caused by the sensor if tit protrudes into a stream of liquid or gas; insertion into the medium being measured, to a sufficient depth to enable the measuring junction to respond to temperature changes of this medium rather than having it swamped by a temperature of a surrounding medium; and, under some conditions, awareness of heat flow into or out of the measuring junction due to the heat conductivity of thermo elements and drilled well. Thermocouple assemblies are available with protection tubes or thermowells. They are offered with grounded or ungrounded junctions. Thermocouple Calibration

Extension
Wires
Extension lead wire extends the reference junction of the thermocouple to the instrument. Base metal calibration of extension wire is normally of the same composition as the thermocouple grade material. Thermocouple extension wires should be installed in conduit whenever possible and the conduit should be well grounded Never run other electrical wires in the same conduit with extension wires. Keep extension wires at least one foot away from a-c lines.
